How Social Media Adds Stress & Steals Your Peace
And I bet it’s happening more than you realize.
As a life & health coach specializing in stress, anxiety, and happiness, this comes up a lot. So many of my clients are scrolling more than they would want to. Plus, it’s exhausting it is to always be reachable, along with the constant checking. The accidental scrolling somehow turns into 27 minutes or you’ve been thrown into some very serious topics that you didn’t want to be thinking about.
And while social media can be useful, inspiring, and genuinely connecting, it can also quietly drain our focus, our joy, and our nervous system.
Thought leaders like Andrew Huberman, and James Clear all point to the same truth:
We usually don’t need more willpower. We need better systems.
Because most social media use isn’t intentional…it’s automatic. We reach for the phone because we’re bored. Stressed. Avoiding. Overwhelmed. Lonely. Tired.
And suddenly, instead of feeling better, we feel more anxious, distracted, and disconnected.
So, I want to offer a few simple boundaries that can create a surprising amount of peace:
1. Don’t let your phone be the first thing that touches your nervous system each day.
Before notifications…choose sunlight. Before scrolling… Choose water, movement, fresh air, or five quiet minutes with your coffee. (Protecting the first 30–60 minutes of your morning can change the entire tone of your day.)
2. Keep your bedroom tech-free. Your sleep and your peace will thank you.
3. Make meals phone-free. It’s just a rule you live by. Better digestion, better presence, better connection.
4. Ask before opening an app:“What am I here for?” If the answer is boredom, stress, or emotional escape… pause.
5. Remove “accidental scrolling.” Take apps off your home screen. Turn off non-essential notifications. Log out after each use.
6. Batch your social media time. Instead of checking all day, try 20 minutes at lunch and 20 minutes in the evening.
7. Protect your feed. Unfollow what creates comparison, pressure, and negativity. (But follow me, I try to keep it light and helpful…and only when I truly feel inspired!) Follow what brings calm, inspiration, laughter, and growth.
8. Create one low-tech window each week. Not necessarily a whole day. Maybe try every Sunday morning or afternoon for a real reset.
The goal isn’t to quit social media. It’s to stop letting it quietly run your life.
More focus. More presence. Better sleep. A calmer nervous system. More actual joy.
That’s the real uplevel!
This week, notice where your phone is filling space that peace could be living in. Pick 1 thing that will make a difference.
If you’ve struggled with this… and feel a little addicted, you’re not alone, and let’s talk. I have a zillion more tools ready for you!
And please forward this to help others in your world. You can be accountability buddies in your quest for more peace! And remember, I am right in Dover, NH. I am your local resource for less stress and more joy!
