A Darned Good Fall Starts in the Summer; A Burnout Coach Explains How
Ahhh, the beach, fireflies, freckles on my face. I love it all and it’s the last day of June so it seems like I’ve got a lifetime before ‘sweater weather’!
And while I contemplate a Mojito tonight, it's easy to say:
"I'll start taking better care of myself when life slows down."
OR
"Once summer is over, I'll get back into a routine."
Rye, NH in the summer!
But what my experience has shown me is that:
The habits that carry us through difficult seasons aren't built during the storm. They're built long before the storm arrives.
Right now, many of us have a little more breathing room. Annnd, before we know it, fall will be here. School starts, work ramps up, calendars fill, and life gets busy again.
Stress doesn't suddenly make us resilient.
It reveals whether we've been practicing resilience all along.
Think of it like training for a race. You wouldn't expect to run a marathon without preparing first, goodness, no! The same is true for your nervous system.
One of my favorite examples comes from world-renowned cancer neurosurgeon and neuroscientist Dr. Rahul Jandial. He explains that brain surgeons and Navy SEALs practice slow, controlled breathing long before they're under pressure. Why? Because when a crisis hits, your brain doesn't rise to the occasion—it falls back on what you've practiced.
That's why I encourage clients to spend just a few minutes each morning practicing breathwork. A slow inhale, a brief pause, and a long, steady exhale teaches your nervous system that calm is available. Over time, your body begins to access that calm more naturally when life becomes stressful.
The same is true for every healthy habit.
Research suggests it takes, on average, about 66 days for a habit to become fairly automatic, though it can take more or less depending on the person and the habit. The goal isn't perfection—it's repetition.
So enjoy the summer, and know that it is the perfect time to build:
• A simple morning routine
• Five minutes of breathwork
• Daily movement
• Better sleep
• Gratitude or mindfulness
• Healthy boundaries around technology
When you take care of your nervous system today, you're creating more patience, more joy, and more capacity for the busy months ahead.
What If This Fall Was Different?
What if you started the school year feeling grounded instead of already overwhelmed?
What if you responded with calm instead of reacting from stress?
What if you weren't burned out by October?
That's what happens when you prepare before life gets hard. You're not just learning tools—you’re fundamentally changing how you show up for yourself and everyone around you.
If you already know this fall will be demanding—whether you're a teacher, college student, parent, or busy professional—don't wait until you're overwhelmed to get support. Please just reach out. Summer is one of the best times to invest in yourself.
If you could use help, together we can build practical, evidence-based habits that regulate your nervous system, reduce stress, and strengthen resilience so that when life gets busy, you're ready.
The future you is being shaped by the choices you make today.
Every deep breath.
Every healthy boundary.
Every morning routine.
Better days ahead aren't built when life gets easier.
They're built now, so make it count.
